Aims
• To develop confidence and effectiveness in managing whole classes
• To understand key elements of good and outstanding teaching
• To develop subject knowledge and pedagogical understanding of English and Maths
• To provide planned, short-term cover for class teachers
• To provide evidence and experience to support Higher Level Teaching Assistant assessment or routes into teacher training
Content
Session 1:
Teaching & Learning. An introduction to key elements of outstanding teaching. What do teachers do? How do they do it? How is the role different to the role of teaching assistant? Programme overview.
Session 2:
Managing behaviour. Managing behaviour effectively using a positive approach including strategies for different age groups, consistency and high expectations, managing transitions within sessions, principles of positive reinforcement and Thrive, having a ‘teacher presence’ and managing low-level disruptions.
Session 3:
An inclusive approach. Managing additional needs within a classroom setting, managing support staff, understanding barriers to learning.
Session 4:
English subject knowledge. focusing on word classes, sentence types, punctuation, spelling and phonics.
Session 5:
Maths subject knowledge. focusing on Mathematical terminology and progression in approaches to calculation.
Session 6:
Questioning. Effective questioning, focusing on Bloom’s Taxonomy, Blanks Levels and higher order thinking skills.
Session 7:
Presentations. Presentation to the group of delegates’ professional learning during the programme and impact on pupil learning.
NB There may or may not be an opportunity to have an extra session in February/March 2021, on Peer observation, using planning and prepared resources to lead a whole-class session, including managing transitions, marking pupils’ work, liaising with parents and feedback to the class teacher. This session will be dependent on the changing restrictions of Covid-19.
Target Audience
Teaching Assistants, Higher Level Teaching Assistants & support staff with a teaching commitment in their role or secondary staff with an interest in the primary phase. Delegates will be working at Level 2 or Level 3 with some responsibilities for managing whole-class sessions.
