A range of first-class maths experts were hosted at this year’s Primary Maths Conference - “Mastery: Digging Deeper” at Buckfast Abbey Conference Centre.
The day built on the resounding success of last year’s conference “Developing Mastery” and was the second joint venture between the Torbay and Plymouth Teaching School Alliance Primary Maths Hubs. Our inaugural event last year attracted around 75 delegates, but it was fantastic to have doubled this number for this year’s event, with approximately 150 colleagues from across the region coming together to develop our understanding and pedagogy around teaching for maths mastery … and basically have the opportunity to talk maths for the day!
It was great to have Debbie Morgan (NCETM’s Director for Primary Mathematics) as our keynote speaker, and her informative and thought-provoking presentation around problem solving and a range of mastery professional development support materials was extremely well-received. Following this opening session, delegates had the opportunity to undertake a number of high-quality workshops throughout the day, covering such topics as: Using Images and Manipulatives to Enrich Classroom Talk and Deepen Reasoning; Multiplicative Reasoning; Effectively Using Picture Books in Maths; Pre-teaching and Assigning Competency; and Investigating Fractions. As well as bringing colleagues together from across the region, it was great to have such a wealth of expertise from a range of nationally recognised mathematical establishments supporting the conference workshops, and we are extremely thankful and grateful for this ongoing support. We are already planning next year’s event, which we are confident will build on this year’s success and dig even deeper into the marvellous world of primary maths education!
